THIRTY-SEVEN

As soon as they’d checked out of the cabin, they headed east from Essex Junction, in case they were being observed. Dylan had told Truss and his pals he was going hiking with his mother in Mount Mansfield State Forest.

Fifteen minutes later, when they stopped for coffee at a gas station near Richmond, Dylan called Annie at the gallery in Westport and explained the tangle he’d gotten himself into last night, posing as her cousin Danny, who also happened to work for her. Annie wasn’t happy about it, but she agreed to cover for him and say that ‘Danny’ was on holiday in Vermont if anyone called the gallery asking after him.

‘Great news about the commission,’ said Annie.

‘It came through?’

‘Evie didn’t say?’

‘We haven’t had a chance to talk. Last I heard, she was running all over with Angus Lovelock.’

Annie drew breath before speaking. ‘Are you fishing?’

He knew her well enough by now to ask, ‘Do I need to be?’

‘I don’t know, Dylan, I really don’t.’

Truss’s car was still parked in front of his apartment, and there wasn’t much more they could do until the tracker alerted them to his making a move. Carrie suggested they swing by South Burlington PD and see if Detective Safran could dig up anything for them on Truss and his friends. It would mean taking him into their confidence, but given the speed at which things were moving, they couldn’t continue to fudge it forever.

They jumped on the highway back toward Burlington. Satnav said fifteen minutes to South Burlington PD. After five, Carrie’s phone trilled. It was Greg calling from Torrington, and there was a clear lift in his voice.

‘We got an ID on John Doe. Personnel at Fort Drum just called. He’s a former soldier, same time as Truss was there.’

‘Are they sure?’

‘As eggs is eggs.’

‘Name?’

‘They’re not saying.’

‘What?’

‘And they won’t send over his file. They say the information it contains is too sensitive to be fired off electronically. They’re okay with us taking a look at it, though . . . hard copy, on site, in person.’

‘Did you lean on them?’

‘Hit them with everything I had, the whole enchilada. They’re not budging.’

Carrie turned to Dylan. ‘Looks like we’re going to Fort Drum.’

‘I’ll see your clearance is sorted,’ said Greg.

Carrie filled Greg in on the events of yesterday evening: the successful planting of the tracker on Truss’s car, and Dylan’s unexpected brush with Truss and his pals in the bar. She made no mention of his foolhardiness in accepting Truss’s sister’s invitation to join them or indeed the close call with Truss when he’d accompanied Dylan back to the cabin, clearly with a view to checking out his story.

‘I just looked,’ said Greg. ‘It’s a good four hours to Fort Drum from Burlington. Maybe Dyl should stay on Truss’s tail.’

‘I need him with me,’ said Carrie. ‘We’re only where we’re at because of him.’

‘Whoa, has the world gone mad? Did I just hear you pay a compliment to a colleague?’

‘Must be the menopause,’ Carrie replied.
